He or she was in a basket full of things I had moved down there several weeks ago.\u00a0 I did manage to move the basket and the snake up the basement steps, out on the porch and into the back yard.\u00a0 Garter snakes eat bad bugs and grubs out of the garden, so I tolerate them, just not in my basement.\u00a0 Last week, I found a huge Salamander crawling around on the back porch.\u00a0 By the time I retrieved a shovel to scoop him up, he was long gone.\u00a0 The appearance of an indoor garter snake and a back porch salamander are unusual.\u00a0\u00a0 Living in the country has taught me to expect the unexpected and deal with it.\u00a0 Glad it wasn&#8217;t a bear!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My big surprise was a garter snake , alive and well, in the basement.
