I've grown sprouts for years in glass quart jars and in manual sprouters. I've had good success, but the key to success is a disciplined routine of rinsing the seeds. I've discovered the EasyGreen sprouter - hallelujah! It's automatic misting system means that I make just one check daily. In five days, I have five-varieties of healthy sprouts - bunches of organic sprouts that cost just pennies to grow. Growing sprouts has never been easier.
Here's how it works. I put about a tablespoon of my favorite organic sprouting seeds in a container tray. There's five trays, so I can grow up to five different varieties at the same time. Fill the reservoir tank with distilled or reverse osmosis water. (Ordinary tap water works, but a white residue will build up on the sprouter surfaces.) The timer turns on a mister for ten-minutes every three-hours. The water mist gently washes over the seeds and then drains off. Once a day, I turn the tray end-for-end and check the water level. When the sprouts are mature, I set them in the light for a few hours to "green them up". I put them in a container and store them in the refridgerator. Super easy!
The container trays also come in a large size for sprouting wheatgrass. The EasyGreen sprouter is stackable, so up to five EasyGreen sprouting machines can be stacked vertically to make a production sprouting center. The front loading door makes it easy to access the sprouts.
Growing your own sprouts is fun and easy. It is a way to save money and add to a healthy lifestyle. Sprouting is a great project for children because it it easy and the results sprouts happen quickly.
During the winter months, most fresh green vegetables go up in price. We like our green salads, so we do two things: We grow lettuce and leafy greens under growing lights and we grow sprouts. We keep about twenty pounds of organic sprouting seeds which will make hundreds of pounds of green veggies packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber. They taste great too. Some are familar like bean sprouts or alfalfa sprouts. Others like lentils have a distinctive nutty flavor. We also like the shaper flavor of daikon radish seed sprouts. Sprouts a great way to add flavor to salads, stir fries, sandwiches, breads, eggs, soups, etc. Use your imagination.
By growing sprouts at home, you can lower the cost of a fresh salad and contribute valuable vitamins and minerals to your diet. Besides salads, you can use sprouts in stir fry, sandwiches, and in health drinks.
Here’s a quote from the University of Ulster Online newsletter dated June 21, 2004, on the research that is being conducted there.
“A few forkfuls of sprouted vegetables could help protect against cancer, new research by Professor Ian Rowland and Chris Gill has shown. Eating just over 100 grams of tasty sprouted vegetables every day for a fortnight has been shown to have clear protective effects against DNA damage in human blood cells, according to the researchers. ‘DNA damage is associated with cancer risk. Sources of DNA damage include diet-related carcinogens, and bodily processes like oxidative stress – and the raw sprouts protect against this kind of damage.’”
