Hollyhocks

I love bright colors. They make me happy. The Hollyhocks that border the front of our main garden are a riot of color. Bob doesn’t like them much. He says they are invasive. The Hollyhock s are planted in front of the strawberry patch. Sometimes, he pulls up invading Hollyhock plants out of the strawberry’s. On […]

Picking and Grinning

I just picked my first zucchini squash for 2011. In addition, my first Jalapeno peppers were added to the basket. The Jalapenos will top the pizza for dinner. It is so fun for me to pick the “first” of the season. It is going to be a very good year.

Storm

Bad storm. I was heading into town and I turned around and came home. The sky is ugly. Three inches of rain came this morning and I thought it was over. Wrong! Wall cloud, thunder and lightening make for a strange sky. The corn fields around me are flooded. I have never seen sky like […]

Windsocks

We have four windsocks that border our main garden. The windsocks makes it look like a party is happening here. The windsocks celebrate the privilege of having a garden that feeds us. Psalm 85:12 Yes, the Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase.

Vacation Bible School and The Food Shelf

Our old green Van is loaded with food collected from St. John’s vacation Bible school kids. The children brought in food to share with the local Food Shelf. I think this is neat! Our children need to be taught to give–and not just be entertained. I hope more and more churches will get the idea […]

Broccoli

Broccoli has been picked. The plan is to make broccoli quiche and broccoli cheese soup and freeze it. I have tried to freeze plain Broccoli, but it does not work for me. It is always limp and tasteless. The quiche is really good and freezes well. So does the soup. We will enjoy the soup […]

Cabbage Because

We are harvesting our Copenhagen cabbages. They are beautiful this year. Some will be kraut. My German grandmother would be proud. Some I will make into various types of slaw. Some will be steamed and some will be stir-fried. I will dehydrate a lot of the cabbages. These will be used in soups and stews […]

Cabbages and Kittens

Cabbages and kittens are the good news today. All our six kittens have found homes and we picked the first cabbage of the season. I grow cabbage mostly to make kraut. In addition, we like it raw, steamed, and sauteed. The first one of the season is always the best. Our sheep love cabbage. They […]
