Square Foot Gardening 2013

While we plan on continuing our 10,000 square foot main garden this year, there will also be more of the square foot gardens going in.  For me, they are the easiest and most fun.  There are photos and basic “How to make it work” info on out web site.
The  Square Foot gardens on pedestals will grow our salad greens and an assortment of herbs and flowers. They are close to the back door and easy to get to.  The greens will include four or five varieties of heirloom lettuce, Swiss Chard, Collard greens, several varieties of Kale, and Mustard greens.  The herbs will include garlic chives, oregano, basil, Italian Parsley, sage and thyme. These are great to snip and mix with the salad greens. I will plant Marigolds in several of the square foot areas. They are pretty and host the pollinators.Bob will be building the new square foot boxes as soon as it warms up a little. These will go out to the garden area with the others, and be planted with a variety of vegetables. I plan on experimenting with some root crops in one of the boxes. Potatoes, carrots, beets, onions, and radishes. We will try to photograph the progress.  Our friend, Jon Frank, from International Ag Labs, is mixing up a new dirt blend for one of the boxes. We will be keeping records of what is planted and how well the veggies grow and taste.  It is always fun to try new stuff.  All our other square foot garden boxes contain our good black organic soil and compost. My Blogs will cover our garden activity. I hope to encourage other folks to plant this year.  It works for me.
