Sunflowers

I planted lots and lots of sun flowers in the Spring. I planted sunflowers because they are 6ft to 8ft tall, bight yellow, and beautiful. I planted sunflowers because they will feed the birds this winter and I will not have to buy bird food. I planted sunflowers because  my chickens will eat them and I will not have to buy so much chicken food.  Most of all, I planted sunflowers  because the vegetables feed my body, but the  flowers feed my soul!

New Potatoes

The first new potatoes of the season were dug this morning.  Dinner will include steamed potatoes, decorated with fresh chives and parsley, and floating in butter. Smiling now!    Having a big garden, and growing our own food, is one of my favorite things to do. It works for me.

Beautiful Basil

The Basil is beautiful this year. My American Harvester Dehydrator is running full blast drying the huge Basil leaves for winter use.  Besides cutting fresh basil to flavor our salads, I am turning some of it into Pesto.   My neighbor came over for a “Pesto Lesson”. She had been buying Pesto at the grocery store. When I told her how easy it was to make your own, she wanted to learn how.  Basil Pesto on top of spaghetti sauce is a beautiful thing.  Yum!

Cucumber Raita

I love Indian food! There is a collection of Indian Spices and Herbs in my pantry. Our cucumbers are plentiful in the main garden and that means Cucumber Raita.  The basic ingredients include cucumbers, yogurt, a few hot green chiles, cumin powder, a little cayenne pepper and mint leaves.  Check out recipes on Google and you will get the idea. It is good, really good!

Hot

It is HOT out there. The humidity is high, high, high.  The heat got to me and I am in my favorite chair with the air conditioner turned up full blast , hydrating  with a tall glass of water.  I picked enough to feed us lunch and dinner and to give me the first bunch of dried flowers to hang from the kitchen ceiling. All types of salad greens, herbs, Kale, onions, wax beans, broccoli, and zucchini squash made it into the house.

I am inside for the rest of the day. It will be fun to arrange the flowers and invent new things to do with vegetables.  The home made salad dressings are a big hit and are saving us money.  The garden is a blessing and makes me Happy! Happy! Happy!
