Garden Hat
The big deal with garden hats and garden gloves is to put them on. I like to get my hands in the dirt, but need to protect what is left of my fingernails. The gloves do this. The hats cover and shade my face, something I need to do. The skin cancer is gone and I try to be careful to wear a big hat in the sun. It is also beneficial to spray with my homemade tick repellant. Thus prepared, I am ready to go. However, there are times when I am so excited to get to the garden that I forget all that and just go!

Cabbage — How many to plant?
It takes 20 large cabbages to fill up the old crock to make kraut. I usually give away at least 10 cabbages to friends who stop by. We use cabbage fresh for cold slaw –about 10. I dehydrate cabbage for winter use in soup and stew. So this year, we planted 48 cabbage plants in the main garden. That should be enough.

Hanging Baskets of Flowers
There are hanging baskets of flowers hanging on the screen porch. Red Geraniums and white Impatiens make a pretty combination. Today, the hummingbirds found them. It is a beautiful thing to sit on the porch and watch the lovely little birds enjoy my flowers.
