Seeds
I have promised myself that I will wait until after Christmas to read my new seed catalogs. It is hard. My favorite seed company is Bakers Creek Heirloom Seed. Their new catalog arrived yesterday. It always has glossy photos, and lots of practical information. Every year, they have new varieties of heirloom seeds. There is […]

Cannon
My son came all the way from Hawaii to visit and I put him to work planting garlic! He does remember how to use a shovel. We should have over 1000 cloves in the ground this year. He remembers how to hug his Mom too. This is all good!

Tilling
Bob is tilling the main garden. Our tiller (Troy Built Pony) weighs around 350 pounds. Bob just came in with a need for a break. It seems that running the tiller is like wrestling a gorilla. If the weather holds, we will have the tilling finished, the garlic planted, and new plastic up on the […]

Snow?
I heard a rumor that we may have a flake or two of the white stuff. That means that I move the potatoes from the porch into the root cellar, bake some more squash and freeze it, and finish up on the apple sauce project.  So much to do and so little time. Our garlic […]

Besides the big pumpkins, I planted a whole bunch of the tiny little orange pumpkins. I also planted the tiny all white ones. Different color gourds were planted too. Decorating has begun and […]

Good
The last potato has been dug, the last tomato picked. The grape vines are empty. All the pumpkins and the squash are stacked in huge piles by the back porch. The hay is in the loft for the sheep. Firewood has been cut. The harvest is complete. It feels good.

Butternut Squash
I am baking the first butternut squash for the season. It is stuffed with chopped apple, raisins, pecans, Cinnamon and a little brown sugar. It sure smells good in here.

Grapes and Apples
Phase # 1 is complete this morning. The last batch of grape juice is bubbling away on the stove. My hands are purple. My fingernails are purple. The spots on my kitchen floor are purple. Phase # 2 is grape jelly. I have helpers coming to pick grapes this afternoon. My deal with them is […]

Grapes
My kitchen is piled high with buckets and baskets full of grapes. Today is the day for grape juice and grape jelly. By tonight, my hands will be purple—but happy.
