My fall Speaking Schedule is starting to fill up. Sunday, I will be speaking at Global Harvest Ministries in Minneapolis. In August, there are four local engagements scheduled. In September, we go to Dallas, Texas, for two more. This is fun for me and I am grateful for the opportunities. My Resume is on the web site. (www.milkandhoneyfarm.com)Â Check it out if your church or Christian group is interested in a speaker.
Our garden is coming on strong and will continue until frost. Several families have volunteered to help me with the picking. One lady said she would help with the processing. This is so much appreciated. My helpers will get a share of the fresh produce and nothing will go to waste. Bob will be working on the garlic this week end. It will be dug and laid out to dry. We will be selling our garlic on the web site this fall.
The summer garden is wonderful, but the harvest is best!( Smile)

Summertime
One of the blessings of summer in Minnesota is sweet corn. Soon, the tomatoes will follow. When I lived in Dallas, I used to buy fresh produce at Farmers Market. The thought was always in the back of my mind that “someday I will grow this stuff”. Well, someday is here!

Veggies
We garden for the heath benefits of eating fresh organic foods. Food prices keep going up and are likely to increase in the near future. A great reason for “growing your own” is the money saved. We are having company for dinner tonight. Everything we serve will be grown on the place. (except the ice cream)

Clorox
Sometimes you just have to use it. Clorox is not my normal mode of cleaning up. However, this morning was the exception. One of the bog dogs made a big, gooey, mess in the basement—- wall to wall. This is not the best way to start off a Monday. The first step was the pooper scooper. It didn’t work well. The second step was Clorox in a bucket of water. Then there was another bucket, and another, and another. Next came the broom to try and sweep it down the drain. That didn’t work either. The final solution, was to sop it all up in an old rag of a blanket and haul it out to the dumpster. Monday is usually one of my favorite days of the week. Now that the “bad stuff” is cleaned up, I will enjoy the rest of it!! (the big dog has been banished and is permanently out side!!!)

Lovely
I have an old lawn chair beside my garden. It is shaded by huge pine trees. I like to sit there and observe all the growing things. Yesterday, I watched a Monarch butterfly for a long time. It was lovely. Peace come in various forms.

Ants
FYI — Did you know that by spraying undiluted white vinegar around door ways and window sills that ants will not come into your house? Sure beats the expensive ant traps at the grocery. Just thought you ought to know.

FYI – Herbs
I have been grinding up the dried herbs this morning. Got to thinking that maybe I should pass on some useful info about cooking with herbs. For every tablespoon of fresh herb, you will need one teaspoon of dried herb. Just remember, it is three to one. Somebody needs to know this.

Picking and Grinning
This morning was a good time to pick. My big basket contains tomatoes, okra, mustard greens, and cabbage. What is really fun for me is to collect herbs and load up the dehydrators. Basil, thyme, sage, Italian parsley, tarragon, and lemon balm are drying now. The green house has become my drying house. There are two dehydrators plugged in and drying the herbs. By tomorrow, the herbs will be dry enough to grind up and stored in glass jars. Thanks to my mother in law, I have a lot of the old time blue canning jars. Those old jars make great storage containers for my herbs. They look so cool marching along the pantry shelves. Each jar is labeled with the name of the herb.
When the world looks blacker by the day, it helps to focus on happy things. My garden is my happy place.

Home Made Pizza
We are having some friends over for dinner tonight. Bob is making his amazing pizza – crust and sauce from scratch. Most of the ingredients, except the cheese and mushrooms, will come from our little farm. I will cut some fresh basil, oregano, and chives from the herb garden to mix into his pizza sauce. We will have a fresh veggie salad. Dessert is Rhubarb crisp.
I love to eat out of the garden. There are no GMO’s, no spray, and no poison in our food. It can be labor intensive, but well worth the effort. Mark twain said, “What this country needs is more dirty fingernails.” I agree!
