Working chickens

All the ripe tomatoes are picked and there are a lot of green ones on the ground.  Now to turn the chickens loose.  We have working chickens on our farm. They do more that just lay eggs. Our chickens will eat green tomatoes, the tomato vines, and fertilize the garden for next year. Life is […]

Count Down on garden

There is an urgency in my garden chores.  We will have frost soon. I picked the hot peppers and Basil today. The Basil is spread out on the dehydrator and the peppers are hanging in clumps from the kitchen ceiling. The last big pick of tomatoes will be on Thursday. I have a friend coming […]

Hot Peppers

One very important thing that I learned the hard way is to wear gloves when I cut up hot peppers. I grow Jalapeno peppers, Cayenne Peppers, Indian Peppers, and Thai peppers.  The current project is to make Candied Jalapeno peppers.  These have got to be my all time favorite thing to put on top of […]

Sign of the times

When the herbs are gathered in, it is a sign that the seasons are changing. Basil, Sage, and Thyme are in the dehydrator now. They will be dried for winter use in the kitchen.  The potato plants are dying back, a sign that we can harvest our potato crop very soon. The leaves on the […]

Celebrating Cabbage

The tiny cabbage seeds, sown last spring, have come full circle. Bob picked the cabbages, hauled them onto the porch and from there I took over. With a little help from my friends, the cabbage has become Kraut.  It is bubbling away in the old crock.  In a few weeks, I will be canning Kraut. […]

Maple syrup for sweetness, organic whole wheat, and extra virgin olive oil are all part of the process. There are nine loaves cooling […]

Sunflowers

I planted lots and lots of sun flowers in the Spring. I planted sunflowers because they are 6ft to 8ft tall, bight yellow, and beautiful. I planted sunflowers because they will feed the birds this winter and I will not have to buy bird food. I planted sunflowers because  my chickens will eat them and […]

New Potatoes

The first new potatoes of the season were dug this morning.  Dinner will include steamed potatoes, decorated with fresh chives and parsley, and floating in butter. Smiling now!    Having a big garden, and growing our own food, is one of my favorite things to do. It works for me.

Beautiful Basil

The Basil is beautiful this year. My American Harvester Dehydrator is running full blast drying the huge Basil leaves for winter use.  Besides cutting fresh basil to flavor our salads, I am turning some of it into Pesto.   My neighbor came over for a “Pesto Lesson”. She had been buying Pesto at the grocery […]

Hot

It is HOT out there. The humidity is high, high, high.  The heat got to me and I am in my favorite chair with the air conditioner turned up full blast , hydrating  with a tall glass of water.  I picked enough to feed us lunch and dinner and to give me the first bunch […]
