For The Birds

All types and varieties of wild birds are swooping down in our back yard. They are collecting white fur shed by my Great Pyrenees dogs. It will make wonderful lining for the nests they are building in the old pine trees.  Smart birds!

More Lambs

One set of triplets and one set of twin lambs were born this morning.  One of the twins, (who I named “Tiny Twin”) needed feeding. It could not reach the Mom’s spouts. I mixed up some Lamb Milk Replacer and stomach tubed the lamb.  A long tube runs down the baby’s throat into one of its four stomachs–the milk replacer is poured into the top of the tube and the baby is fed. I will have to do this every two hours. After a week of this, I will exchange the tube for a baby bottle.  The tiny lamb will become very tame and think that I am his Mom.  It will be fun having a little lamb following me around.

In addition to the lambs, I discovered a pregnant barn cat and broke one fingernail.  (Smile)

Babies

Two ewe lambs have arrived and more could come any minute now. I have to go out and check on the big Mama sheep. Two of them look like they are expecting triplets.  I do a barn patrol every two hours now.  On the way out, I will feed the baby bunnies their treats of celery tops and cabbage leaves.  I will check on Mother Goose who is sitting on eggs. The goslings aren’t due yet, but I watch for them anyway.

The Great Pyrenees pups are still in the basement with Mocca, their Mom. Today, I will be counting up how many males and females there are. Two of the pups are all white and seven of them are Badger marked. Mom gets fed four times a day. She loves it!

After the animal babies are inspected,  it is off to the green house. There are hundreds of baby plants to water and spray with the stinky fish fertilizer.  My marigolds are actually blooming in their tray. I have been picking green things for salads for several weeks. The fresh herbs are especially welcome.

I am loving the season of “babies”. It is special. One of the best things is to sit in a pile of clean straw and cuddle a baby lamb.

Farm News

Last night, Mocca had nice beautiful Great Pyrenees puppies. The sire of this litter is Boaz. They are all looking good! PTL

Bob is moving two of our big Mama sheep into the barn this morning. They are almost ready to drop their lambs. I am thinking triplets.

We just gave one of the baby bunnies a bath in the kitchen sink. She smells like the poodle’s Plum shampoo.  She will be decked out with a red ribbon and delivered as a  wedding shower gift this afternoon. I will let you know how that goes.

Country Wisdom

Being happy does not mean that everything is perfect. It means that you’ve decided to look beyond the imperfections. I can live with this!

Good News

The Good News is that we have hundreds of honey bees working on our plum and cherry trees. There has been much concern about this year’s pollination because of the lack of bees. I am relieved and grateful to see so many bees on my fruit trees.

We had tried to get several professional bee keepers to put their hives on our farm. This worked well for us several years ago. We traded bee space for honey. However, the bee people I spoke with have lost so many of their hives that they do not need the space.

This year, I asked the Lord to send bees to pollinate my garden.  They are here.
