Planting Lettuce

Today, I am planting an assortment of fancy lettuce in four by four pots. They will grow well under the grow lights in the basement. When they get to be about two inches tall, I will begin to trim them and make salads.

In April, I will move them outside to my square foot garden boxes. In May, I will sell the pots of beautiful colored lettuce from my green house.  Each pot will include Amish Deer Tongue lettuce, Revolutionary Red lettuce, Butter head lettuce, and Speckled trout back lettuce.

Who ever thought I would get  so excited about different colored lettuce?  It is that “country thing” big time!

Hot Peppers

Hot peppers take a long time to germinate. Today, I am planting the hot, hot, hot ones. There are Thai peppers and Cayenne peppers. They are super hot. Next to be planted will be the early Jalapeno peppers. They are mild next to the Thai and Cayenne.  The” sweet with a kick” peppers are called Pizza peppers. They are great on a home made pizza. Next in line are the Tennessee cheese stuffing peppers. They turn ruby red and are yummy in the broiler stuffed with cheese.

In several weeks. I will plant the sweet peppers. I like King of the North the best. They are huge bells and very sweet.  Another one of my favorites is a Chinese Giant pepper. I will plant some yellow banana peppers too.

We love the flavors that the hot peppers add to our Thai and Indian dishes. Our Salsa is “flaming”!  However, not many of my friends and neighbors like hot peppers. This is central Minnesota and the folks prefer mild and bland. I will grow plenty of the sweet bells to sell in my green house in May. The hot peppers are for us. We still have some of the red chilies hanging from the kitchen ceiling that were grown last summer.

I like peppers.

Planting Perenial Herbs

I am planting the Perennial herbs today. It can take 25-30 days for them to germinate, so they are always planted early. We replaced the old grow light bulbs with new ones. The trays are filled with potting soil and all my new seeds have arrived.  Most of the perennial herbs are for my herb gardens at Milk and Honey Farm. They are wonderful for cooking and attract the pollinators to my garden. (honey bees and butterflies)

So far, I have planted Garlic Chives, Italian Oregano, Thyme, Sage, St. John’s Wort, Bloody Dock, and Lemon Balm.  Every year, I learn more about the uses of herbs. It is fun to experiment and makes for fascinating study.

I will be selling perennial herb plants from my green house in May. There will also be vegetable plants for sale. My plants are all organically grown from heirloom seeds.

Genesis 1:29  and God said,” See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.”

This whole thing is God’s idea!

Pyr Puppies

Bob took  pictures of the Great Pyrenees puppies this morning. They are six-weeks old and too cute. They can “woof” “wag” “pounce” and “bounce”.

The pups will be ready to go to their new homes in  mid-February. We are receiving deposits to reserve a puppy. To see the puppies,  click here.

Happiness is sitting in a pile of clean straw with a puppy in my lap.

Food Shelf

This morning, I volunteered at the local food shelf.  What was good about today was that I got to give away Bibles and pray. One of the ladies I prayed for cried.  Another  lady wanted to hug me.

People need more than a box of groceries.

A Good Morning

It has been a good morning because:

1. There is an Indian, spicy, stew simmering on the back of the stove. (made from vegetables grown last summer)

2. I am sipping a smoothie made with strawberries and blueberries. (grown last summer)

3. A  man called and bought 10 of our spring ewe lambs who will be born in April. He is sending a deposit to reserve the lambs. (lambs sold before they are born is a very good thing)

4. The laundry is finished.

5. Josie (female Great Pyrenees) is visiting inside today. She is good company.

5. I have the rest of the day to play with my garden seeds!

Immune Booster

One of my favorite herbal teas that is said to boost the immune system contains Echinacea tops and roots, Nettles, and Peppermint. I don’t know about the immune claim, but I do know the tea is good. I add 1 teaspoon of honey to my tea, prop my feet up  and relax.  All good!
