Apple Peels

We eat the peeling from organic apples. However, since we have a sack of store bought apples that have been sprayed with 36 different types of poison, I have been peeling those apples.

It is not all a waste. My bunnies love apple peels, sprayed or not.  They jump up on the side of their hutch to greet me when I show up with the reject apple peels.  I actually feel sort of guilty, feeding any of my animals non organic food.

Maybe I have become a bit extreme over the all organic issue.  You think?

Country Wisdom From Sarah

I do not like the mud slinging accusations from the Republican candidates. Have been thinking that it would be more productive to talk about what they are going to do to fix the mess, than trash talk each other.

Maybe I should send them some country wisdom from my chicken coop.

“It is easier to criticize an egg than it is to lay one.”

We have a rowdy  rooster!

He  flies over the fence, taking several hens with him, and parades up and down our driveway. That rascal struts his stuff and the silly hens follow.  They meander all over the farm, including the pasture with the sheep and Great Pyrenees. The big dogs ignore the chickens, which is a very good thing.  What is amazing to me is that they always find their way back over the fence and into the chicken coop. The rooster “herds” his hens back where they belong each afternoon. The next morning, he leads them out again.

It may be the weather. No snow or ice that is typical of Minnesota this time of year.  Warm days and bright sunshine may be the temptation to roam. I am enjoying watching the rooster lead the girls into new areas to explore. Last week, they made it out to the big red barn. I think they got into the cat’s food because the dish was empty.

That rooster is  unique.  He has his own ideas about things and influences others to go along.  I like that type of personality. In chickens and in people, the individual is always the most interesting!

Visiting

This morning, I went visiting. With my basket full of treats ( dog biscuits and raw eggs for the Pyrs), I actually made it out to the barn. It is no fun having the “crud” and I have missed all my animal friends.  Sunday’s puppies have grown and grown and grown. That is what Great Pyrenees puppies do–they grow.  The pups have their eyes open and are walking and bouncing around.  We will start them on some puppy chow soaked in milk replacer this week.  Sunday is a great Mom and the pups are looking really good.  Tomorrow, I will take my new phone (with a camera in it) and take some pictures.   My big dogs were glad to see me, especially since I brought them their favorite raw egg treats. They gobbled them up–shells and all.

Milk and Honey Farm Update

My son, his wife, and four teen age Grandsons went home to Indiana, yesterday.  Today, it is called “clean up” and “recover”.  The guest room sheets have been changed and the air mattresses that the kids slept on have been deflated and stuffed under the bed.  The laundry has been conquered and put away. My refrig.  still contains some lefts overs, but that issue will be dealt with for lunch and dinner tonight.  The kitchen floor has been mopped and the Christmas gifts put away.

The big sad thing about today is the grieving poodle, Pilgrim.  He has been running around the house, sniffing, and looking for his buddies.  Ever since they arrived last week, Pilgrim has had non stop play mates and laps to sit on. He even slept in the living room on the air mattress with the guys. Now he is sad, very sad.  I am trying to be sympathetic, but just do not have time to sit and cuddle the pampered poodle.

We went tubing at Powder Ridge, visited Candelas and Guitar Center in Minneapolis, and ate up all the food I had wisely prepared ahead of time. The best part of the entire visit was Christmas Eve.  Bob and the three oldest Grandsons all played guitars and sang Christmas carols  and praise songs to the Lord.  I sat in my favorite chair, wrapped in a sheep fleece blanket, with a poodle in my lap. It was wonderful.

Today, I will clean the house and take a very long nap!!  I will remember to honor the Lord of Lord, the King of Kings, and be thankful for my family.
