Puppy Surprise

Ginger is our oldest Great Pyrenees female. She is eleven. Ginger is a full time guardian of our flocks and herds. She even likes the barn cats and they love to curl up beside her.  She has mothered many beautiful puppies in her day. Her last litter was three years ago.

The dogs that patrol the pasture with Ginger are Jesse, Josie, and Gracie (all females) and Boaz (our male).  I noticed that Ginger was getting chubby about two weeks ago. Now, I know why.  She delivered a huge, badger marked male pup on December 21st.   Boaz is the sire.   We had thought that she was too old to have pups.  It is like a seventy seven year old woman having a baby. Not too likely.

Ginger and her pup are doing well. They are camped out on a blue blanket in the basement. She has lots of milk and the pup is getting all of it.

Christmas is the season of surprises.  This is our “puppy surprise”!

Therapy

I need info on how to get in touch with folks who train dogs for therapy or companion dogs.  Wondering if the “Wounded Warrior” program does this. Does any one have information ?

Life

Wrapping Christmas presents, baking Ginger cookies, watching after 10 new born Great Pyrenees puppies, talking to friends on the phone, and getting ready to gather the eggs for more cookies.

Life is good.

Christmas gifts

Baker Creek Heirloom seeds make GREAT  Christmas gifts. My suggestion is to give a gift that keeps on giving!

Great Pyrenees Puppies Have Arrived

Our Great Pyrenees puppies arrived last night. Sunday and Boaz are the parents.

This is Sunday’s first litter. She did really GOOD!  The pups are fat and healthy.

Sunday is the daughter of Jesse and Asher. That makes Asher a Grandpa.  The pups will be ready to go to their new homes in late March 2012. Pictures of our adult dogs are on the web site.

What makes this interesting, is that we are expecting another litter of pups from Ginger and Boaz any day now. Christmas will be really fun.  Two litters of puppies, four teenage Grandsons, my son and daughter in law, and (maybe) a poodle in a pear tree. I am smiling.

Training

I am rereading a book by Debbie and Michael Pearl. (“To Train Up A Child)  The book is excellent and should be read by every parent or parent to be.

While my children are middle aged and my Grandchildren are in their teens, I still learn from this book. Maybe I can pass some of it on to my friends who  have young children.

There are many nuggets of truth  and much wisdom in this book.  I just read that  “A child is going to be the harvest of the parents temperament”. This is so true. Fruit doesn’t fall far from the vine.

On another page it states that “sulking, pouting, whining, complaining begging and the like, should be an eradicated disease. What a concept! I was standing behind a young Mom at the grocery store last week. Her child was pitching a first class FIT over candy bars at the check out line. The poor Mom was clueless as to what to do.  I would have been delighted to show her!!!

Garden Geek

There is a quote from the Houston Chronicle that states “…the seed catalog is an encyclopedic romp through enough plant history to keep a Garden Geek awake at night well into planting season”.

Guess that means  I am a Garden Geek.

Chinese Health TIp

Did you know that 3,000 year old Chinese scrolls mention using white cabbage as a cure for baldness in men?  I will be planting Copenhagen cabbage this spring. Wondering if I should market it as a cure for baldness? Just a thought!
