Bad chickens

Our new flock of Buff Orpington chickens can fly. They hop from their chicken run onto the top of the bunny hutch. From there, it is an easy trip to the top of the garage.  The big rooster has been up there all afternoon doing a lot of crowing. He seems mighty  proud of himself.  Several hens followed him to the top of the garage.  Bad Chickens! Bad chickens! Bad chickens!

Smiling Puppy

Yes, puppies smile. One of the all white, Great Pyrenees, pups, will go to his new home today. This little guy has a great smile. He makes me feel good just to look at him.  His picture  and a couple other smilers are on the web site on Josie’s Puppy page.

Tilling

Bob is tilling the main garden. Our tiller (Troy Built Pony) weighs  around 350 pounds.  Bob just came in with a need for a break. It seems that running the tiller is like wrestling a gorilla.

If the weather holds, we will have the tilling finished, the garlic planted, and new plastic up on the green house.  It is the end of the season and both of us are ready to be done with it.

We are thankful for the harvest. It is a blessing of the Lord.

Puppies

I know better than to become attached to my puppies. They will all be sold and go to their new homes in the next few weeks. This is the reality of raising Great Pyrenees puppies. I try very hard NOT to have a favorite puppy. That can be a challenge. There is nothing cuter that a Pyr puppy!  There are some great  photos of Josie’s pups on the web site.  Come and visit and you will see what I mean.  It is really hard when I see them going out the driveway with their new owner. (sigh)

New Improved

I have been making Apple Crisp for years. This year it is” new and improved”. I added Golden Flax seeds and Walnuts to the topping mixture, about 1/2 cup of each.  The “crunch” really adds.

Bob  likes Apple Crisp with vanilla ice cream on top.

Snow?

I heard a rumor that we may have a flake or two of the white stuff. That means that I move the potatoes from the porch into the root cellar, bake some more squash and freeze it, and finish up on the apple sauce project.   So much to do and so little time.

Our garlic need planting. Over 500 cloves this year. My son will be visiting from Hawaii next week. Wondering if he still knows what to do with a shovel.  The season is slowing down now. There are just a lot of odds and end to finish.  Soon a large white blanket will cover the garden. It will rest there until spring.  It is good, very good.

House plants

All my house plants spent the summer outdoors. They enjoyed the sunshine and being watered with the garden hose.  Today, they were moved back inside. The plants are lined up on window sills and table tops.  I watered all of them and trimmed off dead leaves. The plants will brighten up the cold winter. My Geraniums will actually bloom in the house.  The palm trees, brought from Texas, grew a lot this summer. All of the Rosemary plants are in the kitchen. Rosemary is one of my favorite cooking herbs. There are herb plants, cactus plants, Aloe Vera plants, Spider plants, Ivy plants, and Jade plants. The cuttings I started this summer have really taken off.   They will be given away as Christmas gifts to friends who love plants.

It is cozy in here with all the plants inside. The bringing in of the house plants is just another of the autumn rituals in the country.

From My Window

From my window I an watching our huge male Great Pyrenees play with a small black kitten.  The game is called “Pounce and Bounce”. The kitten stalks the tail of the dog. The dog  gets up and moves a few feet away from the kitten.  The kitten creeps up on the tail of the dog.  The  dog rolls over.  The kitten looks at the dog. The dog looks at the kitten standing on his tail.   It makes me smile.
