Pumpkin Pies

Today is the official “pumpkin pie day”.  I will be bringing in the pumpkins from the cart, baking the pies, freezing the pies, and enjoying the pumpkin harvest. We like pumpkin pie, pumpkin custard, pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin soup, and pumpkin cookies.  The huge pumpkins will welcome our guests by the back door. The tiny pumpkins will decorate the kitchen for fall.  Pumpkins seem to celebrate the the harvest season.

Bob will be a happy camper with pumpkin pie and whipping cream.

Chickens

We say “good by” to the old chickens  tomorrow. They will be picked up by the “processing” lady and returned in packages to go in the freezer.  They have been good chickens. They have kept us in eggs for the last three years. That season will end tomorrow.  Their next  contribution  will be in the form of chicken broth, creamed chicken over biscuits, and chopped chicken for stir fry.

The young pullet hens and one rooster will be moved into the main chicken house.  There are 12 hens and they are enthusiastically giving me 12 eggs a day.  (The rooster is happy too).

Chickens are handy on the farm. They contribute a lot for our table. They give their “All”.

Puppies

Jesse and her pups were moved out to the barn kennel last night.  They had managed to get out of the whelping box and were busy exploring the basement. Not good! There is an open sump pump in the basement that they could fall into.  There is laundry soap they could eat and lots of old stuff they could chew up.

Today, the pups are having a good old time exploring the barn kennel. There is nice clean straw for them to romp in, a water pan to drink out of, and a container of Purina puppy chow in case they need a snack. They have met the barn cats, and find them great play mates.  The pups have learned to “woof” and “wag”.

We have two kennel areas in the barn. In one kennel are Josie and her pups and the other one holds Jessie and her pups. The area is guarded by four adult Great Pyrenees who have free range of the farm.  The puppies can see the sheep through their fence and seem to find them interesting.

We will be taking puppy pictures of Josie and her puppies this week end. They will be posted on the web site.  Our email has not worked for about a week. Bob has called the company and they will troubleshoot the problem.  If you have sent an email, I have not received it. Please call me instead for information on the puppies. (320 286 2865) We have puppies available, both males and females.

Shiloh

Shiloh, died peacefully on Oct. 1. She was ten years old.  Shiloh was the largest female Great Pyrenees we have ever had on the farm. She was kind, and easy going.  I will miss her gentleness. She is buried behind the green house, along with Honey Bear, Boomer, and Molly.

We have enjoyed breeding Great Pyrenees dogs for 15 years. They have brought much happiness into our lives.  For that I am grateful. Except right now, it hurts.

“Blessed be the Name of the Lord. He gives and takes away, He gives and takes away. Blessed be the Name of the Lord.”

Sheep Races

It happens every fall. Our sheep are racing in circles around the barn pasture. When the weather turns cooler, they get crazy.  All summer, they have parked under the trees and rested. They never move faster than a slow walk. Now they are running, full speed.  Maybe it is about time for our Ram to visit.

Celebrate the Season

I grow pumpkins–lot and lots of pumpkins. They become pies.  But–they are also fun to decorate the porch and the living room. Besides the big pumpkins, I planted a whole bunch of the tiny little orange pumpkins. I also planted the tiny all white ones.  Different color gourds were planted too.

Decorating has begun and we are celebrating the season.  Fun!

Wishing I had some Bittersweet. It  is really pretty to add to the pumpkins and gourds.

Chickens

I made the phone call and set up the appointment for the recycling of my three year old hens.  They will become  stewing hens and be  much appreciated over hot biscuits.

I have a new batch of pullet hens. They are ready to move into the main hen house. There are 12 hens and I get 11 to 12 eggs a day.

I like chickens. They don’t cause  trouble and can multitask.
