Sticky

Everything is sticky. The refrig, the pantry, the kitchen cupboards, the stove, the counters, and the floor.  It is obvious that I have been picking and processing and NOT cleaning. Now that the garden is picked and most of the processing completed, it is time to attack the “Sticky”!!

I will get to it—soon. Right now, the ” Sticky” rules.

Good

The last potato has been dug, the last tomato picked. The grape vines are empty. All the pumpkins and the squash are stacked in huge piles by the back porch. The hay is in the loft for the sheep. Firewood  has been cut.

The harvest is complete.  It feels good.

It Is A Hard Thing

It is a happy day when the puppies are born.  When they die, it is a hard thing.  Several of Jessie’s puppies  died today. It is hard.

“Blessed be the Name of the Lord. He gives and takes away, He gives and take away. Blessed be the Name of the Lord.”

Butternut Squash

I am baking the first butternut squash for the season.  It is stuffed with chopped apple, raisins, pecans, Cinnamon and a little brown sugar. It sure smells good in here.

Grapes and Apples

Phase # 1 is complete this morning.  The last batch of grape juice is bubbling away on the stove. My hands are purple. My fingernails are purple. The spots on my kitchen floor are purple.

Phase # 2 is grape jelly. I have helpers coming to pick grapes this afternoon. My deal with them is to give them half of what they pick and I keep the other half. This is a win win situation. They get loads of beautiful, organic grapes for free, and I get free labor.  Jelly day will happen on Saturday.

The big boxes of apples are still sitting in the corner of the kitchen. I started on the applesauce, but did not even make a dent in the amount of apples. Apples keep longer than the grapes, so that project may happen next week.

I had a wild and crazy thought about making some old fashioned caramel apples.  Since my practical and sensible side will probably prevail, the caramel apples may just be  a passing thought. (on the other hand?????)

Pyr Puppy Update – Sept. 20, 2011

Our Great Pyrenees puppies (all 18 of them) are keeping me busy. Josie and her nine pups are in the barn kennel. These puppies are almost four weeks old. They are running around, climbing on their Mom and attack my shoe strings when I go out to feed them.  They have begun to eat out of a large flat pan, a mixture of canned food, raw eggs, cod liver oil, and Purina puppy chow. They are “wearing” some of the sticky mess, but a lot of it does get in them. Josie is feeding them too, and they are growing. They will be ready to go to their new homes  four weeks from today. They have met the barn cats and love to play with them.

Jessie’s puppies are two weeks old.  They have their eyes open and are beginning to focus on the world around them. These babies are still in the basement in the whelping box. Jessie is a good Mom and stays with them. We will be taking pictures in several weeks. It will be interesting trying to line everybody up for the photo shoot.  I hope that my friends from Minneapolis will  help me bathe and groom them for the pictures. It will be wild, but a ton of fun!

For information on reserving a puppy, call or e mail. Check out our web site for puppy information and updates. Look at our training page for suggestions on training your Pyr puppy.

Apples

Yesterday, it was grape juice. Today, it is applesauce. Our apple trees got pruned this year. (Bob and the chain saw). We didn’t have one apple. However, my nice neighbor had a bumper crop and gave me apples.  Today, I will be making apple sauce and apple cobbler. It is all good!

Grapes

My kitchen is piled high with buckets and baskets full of grapes. Today is the day for grape juice and grape jelly. By tonight, my hands will be purple—but happy.

Abound

“The Lord your God will make you abound in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your land for good. For the Lord will again rejoice over you for good as He rejoiced over your fathers.”  Deut. 30:9
