Always

Psalms 16:8    I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

Pilgrim The Poodle

Pilgrim, the poodle, smells like a plum. I received a free bottle of Plum Shampoo for dogs.  Bob used it on Pilgrim.  Our poodle likes to roll in nasty dead things. It is better to smell like a Plum! Wondering how long that will last.????

Planting

This week, we will begin to plant the main garden. Bob and I will plant Yukon Gold potatoes. The goal is to plant enough potatoes for our use and  have some to share with the local Food Shelf. The old timers say to plant potatoes before Good Friday.

I will plant Snow Peas to climb the cattle-panel trellises. They will be soaked overnight to speed up the germination process. The onions sets I ordered have arrived. We use a lot of onions and we plant a lot of sets. It will take both of us, to get them all in the ground. I LOVE my garden! Let the games begin!!!

Compost is a Beautiful Thing

Compost is a beautiful thing. It smells bad and teems with ugly insects.  Nightcrawlers poop in it.  What our compost does for our garden harvest is amazing. It is our own form of “Black Gold”.  It helps that we raise sheep and chickens. Their “by-products” contribute to our form of very rich compost. We have discussed the possibility of bagging it up and selling it. It sure beats the anemic compost available at local nurseries.

Square Foot Gardening

Bob is mixing the “soil” blend for our square foot garden boxes.  He will use 1/3 Peat Moss, 1/3 Pearlite, and 1/3 of our own composted materials.  While we have a 10,000 square foot main garden, we enjoy planting the square foot gardens with herbs, flowers, and vegetables.  The harvest is amazing. Each garden is four foot by four foot and about 7 inches deep.  One box will keep one person in fresh produce for a season. We posted plans for the boxes and directions for building on our web site.  www.milkandhoneyfarm.com. I think everyone should grow some of their own food.  The square foot boxes make it easy FOR THOSE WITH LIMITED SPACE.

Can You Stand All The Excitement?

It’s Saturday, and we had Pecan pancakes with strawberries and maple syrup for breakfast. Bob moved all the plants from the basement grow lights out to the green house. I watered all the plants and sprayed them with dead fish fertilizer. The neighbor came with his big wagon to pick up a  load of straw for his cows.  I made an Indian Fish Curry for dinner. Bob  practiced his music for church tomorrow. I answered e mails, put laundry away, and ironed a jacket to wear to church.  I read several chapters in several books that are on the reading table. Then I took a nap.

Can you stand all this excitement?

Greenhouse News

There was good company in the green house this morning. One poodle and two cats kept me company while I was transplanting  the set outs.

This year, there will be many varieties of heirloom tomatoes available. (Brandywine, Amish paste, Italian paste, Roma, Italian Beefsteak, grape, cherry and more) Since tomatoes companion well with Basil, I planted extra Basil to have available. They compliment the tomatoes and both grow better together. Giant sweet bell peppers are available, as well as Jalapeno peppers, Pizza peppers, and Banana peppers. The Pizza peppers are a favorite and will sell out quickly. They are sweet with a “kick”. Italian parsley and Oregano are available as long as they last.

Folks can call and reserve their plants beginning April 1st.  Appointments can be made the first week in May to pick up plants. The month of May is my busy time in the main garden, so I will be home ALL the time!

Baby Bunnies

Our New Zealand white rabbits are sweet pets and make wonderful fertilizer for my garden. We are keeping several of the baby bunnies for our hutch. The rest are available for sale.  Call me or e mail for information.  They will be ready to go to their new homes Easter week. The babies are  with their Mom, but eating out of the food dish and drinking from the water bowl.  They are all white, with pink eyes and ears.

I take trimmings of lettuce and green things out to the hutch for treats. They all come running when they see me. Bunnies can be kept in the house as pets. They are easily trained to use a litter box. I would probably keep one inside, but it would be too much of a temptation for the poodle. He would not hurt it, but would love to chase it around! Bunnies don’t bark, or meow, or argue. Nice!

My Father is God

Exodus 15:2

The Lord is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation; He is my God and I will praise Him; My Father is God, and I will exalt Him.

Spaghetti Sauce

Spaghetti sauce just isn’t sauce without fresh basil and oregano. It is so fun to go out to the green house and trim the plants for my sauce. It helps to have fresh mushrooms and lamb burger too. Then there is the Parmesan cheese grated on top.  Guess what’s for dinner. Yum!!
