My New Cook Book

Friends, just back from a trip to Israel, brought me a new cook book. (“Food at the Time of the Bible”)

That was yesterday. Today, I have two big pots simmering on the stove. One contains Jacob’s Lentil Soup. The other, is full to the top of Lentil and Barley Stew.

After sampling, my word for the new recipes is YUM!  My word for my friends is “Thank You” for thinking about me.

Feeling Old?

“They shall still bear fruit in old age; They shall be fresh and flourishing, to declare that the Lord is upright; He is my rock and there is no unrighteousness in Him.”   Psalm 91;14,15

Well Then????

Laughing Now!!

I am still laughing about our trip to the cities yesterday. (Minneapolis/ St. Paul)  Bob and I both saw it at the same time. It was a black Hearse pulling a U Haul.  They say this is something that you will never see. We both saw it and will swear to the fact that it really was a Hearse pulling a U Haul.  We tried to get close enough enough to take a picture, but the driver was too fast for us. He sped through a red light. We did not. By the time the light changed, the Hearse and the U Haul were long gone.

We are still laughing!

Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.

Chicken and Bisquits from Milk and Honey Farm

The old rooster crowed his last. He is now simmering gently in my biggest pot .  He will be joined by onions, garlic, mushrooms and little green peas.  The gravy that he is floating in is made out of chicken broth, whole wheat flour, and skim milk.  He is seasoned with sage, thyme, salt and pepper.

I will make some whole wheat biscuits.  The rooster sauce will be poured over the hot biscuits for dinner. There is enough of the rooster mix for several big meals. This is an inexpensive way to feed a lot of folks. The only items that I had to buy were the mushrooms, peas, and milk.  Everything else came from the garden and out of the chicken house. This is pure “country comfort food”!

Ecclesiastes 5:18  ” Here is what I have seen. It is good and fitting for one to eat and drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labor in which he toils under the sun all the days of his life which God gives him, for it is his heritage. “

Seed Catalogs

The seed catalogs have begun to arrive in the mail.  This is a good thing, as so much of the mail this time of year is junk. I will not pour over the seed catalogs yet.  That treat will be saved and savored when it is twenty below zero and more snow is in the forecast.  The photos of vegetables and flowers will help combat the seasonal depression that often comes with gray days and little sunshine.

One of my favorite winter things is to plan next years garden. Sitting in my favorite chair, drinking hot chocolate, and looking at colored photos of beautiful vegetables, I shall ignore the weather outside and dream.

Proverbs 28:19 He who tills his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows frivolity will have poverty enough!

Walking

The sun is shinning and it is bright out there.  I am contemplating climbing into  my long johns, leashing up a couple of  the big dogs and going for a long walk.  The air is crisp and clean. It smells like winter. The poodle will have to stay home. He went to the groomer last week and she  cut his fur too short for winter hikes.

Walking is good for me for a lot of reasons. It clears my head from busyness, it helps keep my weight down, and I can talk out loud to God.  He always walks with me.  When people drive by on the road, they must wonder whom I am talking to.

Leviticus 26:12 “I will walk among you and be your God, and you shall be my people”.

The Old Song

There is a chorus from an old song that I am singing today.  I have to sing, or I will cry.  Josie (the Mother of the new puppies) sat on one of the pups and it smothered to death.  The words to the song help me right now.

“Blessed be the Name of the Lord, He gives and takes away, He gives and takes away. Blessed be the Name of the Lord.”

Spaghetti Sauce from the Land of Milk and Honey Farm

On the back burner of the stove  sits my biggest pot.  Inside, simmers a wonderful blend of meat, vegetables, herbs, and spices.  The tomatoes, onions, garlic,  and peppers were grown in the main garden last summer.  The basil  and oregano are from my herb garden next to the green house.  The meat is Venison that was a gift from a friend.  This glorious blend of spaghetti sauce will be draped over noodles, covered with a blend of melted Italian cheeses, and draped with Pesto.  The big pot holds  several gallons of sauce. This  batch will provide our supper and  several company dinners.

The  kitchen smells wonderful. The only items that I had to buy were noodles and cheese.  This makes for a lot of very inexpensive meals.  As the weather turns colder, the kitchen becomes my office.  It is all good!

Deuteronomy 28:5  “Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.”

Spot On

The great Pyrenees puppies are almost a week old. Right now, they are snuggled up against their Mom on a warm blanket in the basement whelping box.  I can almost see them growing.

They are round and fat and happy!

My favorite pup  has distinct Badger markings and more spots on her back and rump that any of her brothers and sisters.I have named her “Spot On”.

In a few days, Mom and puppies will go to the outside barn kennel. I moved an old lawn chair inside the kennel.

A lap full of warm puppies is a beautiful thing.
